The Michigan Independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission will meet Monday and Tuesday to finalize their drafts of the state House, state Senate, and Congressional maps.
Currently, the commission plans to consider collaborative maps on Monday including three state House maps, three Senate maps, and five congressional maps. According to the MICRC’s own analysis, by all measurements, they favor Republicans by as much as 6.5%. We do not want another Republican gerrymander for the next 10 years.
On Monday, individual commissioners will also be given the opportunity to present their own map proposals.
Speak up now for fair maps:
There are two final opportunities to talk to the commission before they vote on which maps will move forward to the public hearings. If you have time Monday and/or Tuesday morning, please sign up to give a virtual public comment. Can’t attend the morning meetings? Leave a comment online through the MICRC’s Public Comment Portal.
Public comment is limited to one minute.
Introduce yourself and tell the commissioners where you live.
Ask the commission to not move maps forward that would give Republicans an unfair advantage.
Michigan is a Dem leaning state. Fair maps should reflect the state’s diverse population.
Maps that lean several points to the right and give Republicans an advantage are unfair.
We want maps with zero political bias.
Close enough is not nearly good enough.
